Hey Suresh…thanks for the alert in my blog.
Good to see another audioblogger in the community, i am not well versed in music to give any constructive feedback. I like what i heard.. I found your composition pleasing to my ears….esp liked the way it progresses from a bold theme to melody and back, but somehow it gave a strong feeling of listening to some part of “how to name it”, must be the same raagam?
Do post more of your work and all the best wishes.

Narayanan,
Actually before the strings start playing the main theme, i had a solo instrument playing the theme, but didn’t like that much and removed it and that too, my composition is not purely based on the melody, i just wanted to pick a simple, small melody and build a orchestration over it and that is why it sounds less melodic in parts. Anyway, thanks a ton for ur comments and do keep visiting this page where a lot more is to come.

Hemanth,
Yeah sure will concentrate on melody more. There are acutally two melodies here. One that appears on a solo flute in the middle and the other is the main theme on which the whole orchestration is built on. Actually I concentrated more on orchestration. hey. Its good, its surprising that its your 1st composition.. but as good as it is, it cud also be better. like other have said, melody.. and also maybe you should build up the song more.. i mean, right now, the ending and beginning are a bit nondescript almost the same, more variation would be cool.. enjoyed the way the sudden bass in the middle surprised me.. n maybe the imitation of the music phrases needn’t be so strict.. more versatality.. hope you don’t mind me being so frank.. i’ll probably be checking back later to check out other compos once they’re here!
.. but i must say, the begining really was good.. just that maybe you could have modulated to something a bit different later on in the song.. keep composing, don’t ever stop.! cya.

Suresh, very good attempt, especially considering it is your first try. I agree with Pradip sir, the idea comes through the tune. I am not sure if I am qualified enough like other people here to tell you this, but anyways, here goes my 2 paisa. I felt fruityloops inhibited your creativity, as it has a lot of limitations. Try to get hold of a more complete interface.
good luck!

Suresh, welcome to the audioblogging world!!
If you need my honest opinion, I would rate this ** – And it is okay since this is your first attempt.
At 00:40, the bg suddenly stops, so it gives an empty effect and it also suddenly comes up at 00:54. It doesn’t sound good.
Anyways, please keep coming up with more, none of us are perfect or professionals, so its just a matter of time. Keep audio-blogging!!!
ursmusically said,
November 4, 2006 at 6:58 pm
Jo,
Thank you very much for your honest feedback. Actually that empty effect was intentional to move from a solo theme to a orchestration of the same solo theme, so that when it bursts out finally playing the main theme, i thought the transition would be good and punchy.

Hi Suresh:
Listened to your piece, seems good for a first attempt. One suggestion/advice: Always remember that programming/software is a tool, it should not be a substitute for your “free” wings of creativity. Focus on the core melody and/or on an idea that you want to convey. The software/synth etc. comes later.
It is true that sometimes ideas occur AFTER you play around with the software or start a rhythm pattern, but that MAY (as many before me pointed out) limit you. What I observed is that it makes a tune mechanical, because, we merely followed the software. I apologize for making my comment confusing. To summarize focus on melodies, or effects, depending upon what you want to do.
Hmm…the famous director of Titanic James Cameron once said “what others call obsessiveness with details is just a work ethic for me”….so keep working…you have talent!

KK,
Totally agree with you about the software, the piece (the orchestration) is not exactly the one I had in mind. Thanks a ton for ur honest feedback and keep checking this space for more.

Shari,
There are many. I am actually influenced more by Western classical music, because of Illayaraja and the short span of time during which i learnt Piano. I didn’t pick, that i was the only available option, and i even don’t know what else is there. And sure i would speak more about the thought process behind the making of the music. Thanks for ur comments and keep watching this space for more.

Thanks for visiting my blog.
Excellent first attempt. You are on the right track!!.
Just realised that it has been a year since my first post and I started off just like you .
Would like to share a few things I have learnt for the last one year or so.
1. It is fine to start with a loop based software, but try to get away from it as soon as possible. Loops are good as building blocks, but create your own music to build the key layers.
2. Invest in a good software, which will help you in doing MIDI sequencing and audio recording/editing.
3. Get a hardware or software syntheziser. These days software synths are very popular.
4. Learn music theory.
5. Learn to play the keyboard.
6. Learn more about the different parts in a song. Bass, drums, chords, melody etc.,
7. Learn more about a song’s structure.
8. Create tunes for pre-written songs.
9. Keep working on it and keep posting.

Prem,
Thanks for that wonderful comments and suggestions. I will keep each and every point in mind and try to follow while making music and developing the knowledge in music. But onething i want to make it clear, though i used a fruity loop software, believe me i didn’t use a single available loop in this piece. I was very sure about not using loops in the song. And the melody or any layer in the arrangements of this piece are composed and keyed into the software. May be i myself has looped some of the main melodies and sub melodies.

Hi,
Well, the best part for me was the string and reed section interplay. That requires considerable imagination as it is not that difficult to create a fairly pleasant and sensible opening. Developing it into a pattern is more difficult and u made a great attempt at doing that. I don’t know how a lot of people are saying this is pleasant, in the sense I could feel a lot of pent-up anger even in this short piece. There waz a lot of mystery and intrigue in the whole theme, though not fully developed, which is OK, since this is ur first attempt.
What did I miss – if u don’t mind an eenie-weenie bit of criticism
– even in the short space of time, u cud have made things a little more interesting maybe by developing a second pattern that runs parallel to the first instead of emphasising the same theme. Like, intorduce a brass pattern or give the strings a free rein. This is not to take any credit away; I have no idea how the Fruity Loop software works. It must have taken a lot of effort for u to put this together. Kudos and keep composing, keep ideating.

Hi Madan Mohan,
Thanks a lot for your honest feedback. I do found there is scope for improvement. The reason I stopped without developing much is because, i have been chewing this theme for a long time and I was working with the Fruity Loop for the first time. I didn’t even know how to use it, when I started to shape the theme in the software. If i had a good quality soundfonts my composition would have been a lot more different and much more lengthy, i couldn’t get the right sounds i had in my mind with this Software. Some of the instruments which i have used was not my choice initially, I had diff choices in my mind, but when my theme is played which has lot of stretched notes, it produced a jarring sound and that is why most of the time i had to replace some of the instrument with some other instruments having a bearable and close to what i had in my mind sound. Anyways I always believed that this theme has lot of scope for orchestration and betterment in its entirety. I am planning to do this again some time later, but now, i just want to move on and concentrate on my next piece. Do Keep watching this space.

Hi Suresh,
For a first-timer, i would rate this as a really good attempt. IMHO – There seems to be a forceful, wilful, distortion in the tune, much against the gravity of the melody. If you intended to bring such a difference, then the transition should be subtle, if not, then, you will have to work on that.
Once again, where exhibited, the melody seemed very well thought out and haunting ! – keep the good work up !
